Coding with Workshop4Me

17th June 2018, Sunday, 2 pm – 3:30 pm

Workshop4Me offers a fantastic opportunity for children who love computers and gaming to extend their knowledge beyond ‘playing passively’ to ‘learning creatively’ in the medium. Many parents out there will bemoan the former and will appreciate the latter, especially if their children are being productive with their time on the computer and developing new skill-sets along the way. Using their natural curiosity, children learn to code, to think logically, to debug and solve problems, and drive projects. All that while playing, having fun and making friends.

What:

The awesome mentors from Workshop4Me, among them tech whiz Leo, 16, and #girlintech Avanti, 11, introduce children to Computer Science using paper and computer based exercises. Once the participants have learned the basic concepts, they make their own projects using drag and drop programming on Scratch. Or they can build their own mobile application. Those with a good grasp of computer science concepts can dive deeper learning Python. And then… the sky is the limit.

Workshop4Me also organises special events throughout the year to celebrate EU Code Week in October, the Hour of Code in December, the International Women’s Day in March, the Scratch Day in May, the Science Week in June/July.

The venue:

They are located in Kirchberg, Luxembourg, and regular sessions are held Saturdays and Sundays. To learn more about their events and how you can join them, check their website: http://www.workshop4me.org/ or like them on Faccebook.

WordPress for Non-Developers

Less than 1% of the world population are developers. The remaining 99.7533% of the people on Earth belong to the not-so-exclusive ‘regular humans’ club. The fact that the speaker, Nick, is not a wiz of PHP, MySQL, Big Data or Java Script makes him part of this very big community.

Yet, being a ‘regular human’ does not mean one cannot have their own website, or their own online shop and by no way does it mean that one should not know how to protect themselves against cybervillains. The same should apply to everyone.

If learning how to be a tech-savvy regular human being sounds like something you would be interested in, then come and join us at the WordPress for Non-Developers meetup by MICSE. During the workshop, Nick will share his experience of creating WordPress websites in the past few years. He will also run a practical case study and will show you many ways in which a website can go wrong… and how to fix it. No single website is made from the first try. It is all about learning by doing and learning by making mistakes.

The speaker

Nick Todorov works as a community manager and website administrator for a large corporation, which essentially means he gets paid to be on Facebook. He likes start-ups, translating books and fixing websites that he has managed to break in unimaginable ways.

Open Doors at Code Club Strassen

20th June 2018, Wednesday, 6 pm – 7 pm

Let’s visit Code Club Luxembourg! Code Club Strassen opens its doors on Wednesday so join us and take a peek at all the awesome things kids there do: researching, developing and building our own retro-gaming consoles!

Code Club weekly after-school sessions are aimed at children aged 8 to 11, different levels, and are held around the country free of charge. They are about fun, creativity and learning through exploring. It’s important that the children enjoy their time at Code Club and that it doesn’t feel like another school lesson. They should understand that they’re in charge of the computer, and can (and should) make it do what they want, not the other way around. Other benefits of Code Club, such as learning about computational thinking, or developing expertise in coding, are secondary to these two objectives. Having said that, children will absorb all these wonderful skills as they work through the projects rather than through didactic teaching.

So join us, meet the mentors and, if you find the activities fascinating, find out how to inscribe your kid for next year.

Become a mentor

Or maybe you’ll get inspired yourself. With or without coding skills, you can help bring Code Club sessions to many more kids, who deserve a chance to learn to use technology creatively. Learn how you can make a difference and join the great family of Code Club supporters.

Read more information on Code Club website or follow Code Club on Facebook or Twitter.
